Using Artifical Rocks in FOWLR Tank

Is it ok to use fake african chichilid rocks in the FOWLR tank for base rock then have live rocks on top?

I wouldn't use the rocks. I remember one of my friends used lava rocks from his cichlid tank and had a lot of problems. The rocks leached phosphates, etc...
