Dsb in refugium?

Hi I am on the fence about putting a dsb in my refugium. My original plan was to put large piece of live rock and cheato now my LFS is telling me I should have at least 5 inches of sand. My main goal is growing pods and some nitrate removal. Any suggestions?

If your looking to grow pods just do a decent rubble rock substrate and cheato. I personally run a 24 hr light cycle on my fuge
