Questions about my first setup, when to add sand.

So tonight I finally got the plumbing done on my setup(75 gallon)

It's been a 6 month process to get this tank going.


I was told by guy from my LFS who did my plumbing that it was okay to add sand afterwords as long as i turn off powerheads and pump.

So my question is, after I thoroughly risne out sand.

How do i put sand in after rock is in place?

can someone school me on how to move forward... thanks

Try using pvc piping and a funnel and pour the sand into the funnel and use the pvc pipe to guide it to the bottom and where you want it. Can also use a recent size(diameter) tubing. Same principal. Goodluck

Normally I only put in enough water to cover the top of my LR then add my sand, that keeps the water pretty clear. And it's easier to spread the sand.

I put the sand in first then pour water onto a plate to prevent clouds but in this case I think the pvc or a 2 liter cut to a cylinder seems like a great idea

Rocks first, then sand...sand under rock work can cause it to be 'unstable' and moved by 'diggers'

It's also a good idea to put "egg crate" under the rock before you put your sand down. It will keep the rock stable and add a little security if you decide to move some rock and accidentally drop it.
