How many use an Algae Scrubber?

I was thinking about adding one to my system and would like some feedback from anyone with experience using them. I'm thinking about the HOG scrubber or going the DIY route.

I have a refugium. Does this matter? Where would be the best place in the sump to set it up?

three scrubbers

I use three DIY scrubbers as my filters, two waterfalls and one small slanted horizontal one. I alternately clean one of the waterfall and half of the horizontal one every week. It seems that the HOB one takes longer to mature and have read is not as effective as a waterfall. Check out the
turbosaquatics.com forum for some discussions on these various designs, and the various possible placements on the scrubber.

It will definitely help with a hair algae problem but it takes some times, like several months.
