I took a time off from the reef and went fowler. Now I am looking to get back in.
Since my last reef tank the LEDS have come way down in price.
I plan on a 48x24x18 90 gallon starphire tank Reef ready.
I am going to keep mostly chalice, acans, and similar lps.
Maybe a couple encrusting montiporas.
What would be the best lighting for me? I do not want to bother with cloud modes and multiple units.

I have a 90g and am using 2 AI Hydras. I know you said you didn't want multiple units and cloud modes. Honestly I don't know much about the single large strip models but just to tell you about the AIs, I'm very happy with them. I love the total customization of the colors and time of day settings. I can pretty much control every LED color minute by minute if I wanted to. Of course, I don't I have a start time in the morning programmed, a little dip in intensity during the day and a little brighter at night before ramping down for bed.

As for the cloud modes, I actually do use them. I have them set very low, like just a 2% chance but for me it adds a little character and mystery to the tank when once in a while (and at 2% it's really once in a rare while) the tank dims down for a little while. It's actually pretty cool.

if you visit aquatic obsessions in nj you can check out the maxspect razors on a 48x24 footprint which are growing all types of corals. i personally like them and they have great reviews.

The modes do sound cool but I am worried about the simplicity.
I still haven't figured out my smart phone.

The modes are very simple. In AI's case you just configure from your computer or smartphone the probability and intensity of the effect (cloud and/or lightning) and it does the rest

I first thought it was a gimmick I would not use but after seeing it actually work I decided to leave both on at a low percentage. Once in a while on they activate
and it's really cool and nice to see something different.

For a 48" wide tank though you'd definitely need to hydras.
