I know what to watch for to say when the water is OK but what about the DSB? Is there a certain benchmark like "number of crawlies per inch" that I can use to gauge when I should add the cleanup crew? I wouldn't want any cleanup crew or detritovores going hungry; and I want to let the DSB get ... uh ... ripe? Yeah. Ripe.

ripe? heh.

I am in essentially the same boat as you. I got my live rock in beginning of july. Sitting on what appears to be perfect water param's for nearly 4 weeks now. Still waiting on putting in snails in my tank - I cant see much life beyond some coralline and nuisance algae in my tank yet...

I set my DSB and Rock up, Waited a month, Added a detritivore kit from Inland, waited a month and then added some Blue leg hermits and a rather large Brittle star

I think you can go faster than that, but remember, you have to feed the critters when you have no other source of food in there (like fish waste)

Your tank looks ready to me, I would just start out slow, you are feeding the DSB aren't you?

If you are talking about the kits you buy which contain worms pods etc., these can be added at any time. If you choose to add them during the cycle, acclimate carefully and toss in a small piece of food.
For snails and crabs wait until your cycle is complete and in the case of snails, do a minimum 4 hour drip method acclimatation process. (very important)

Once you have fish, feeding them will probably be enough, I haven't had any fish in mine for like 2 months, but there has been critters in there that whole time

SO, I drop in a sinking spirulina tablet and watch all the buggies come out to play

Since I want you to be able to get used to it, I will keep this one as long as I kept the first one
