I think my one day old Brown Powder Tang has the Ich. I noticed small white spots on its body that were not there the day before. I picked up some herbal Ich (have crabs and snails) from my LFS and followed the directions, which called for 10 about teaspoons that being half the bottom for my 92 gallon tank. I also removed the charcoal from my wet/dry. The directions say to follow the ten teaspoons daily for a week this seems a bit much and costly using half a bottle a day. I have read about garlic soaked food and adding to the tank how long do you do this and does it work? Suggestion, help?

Remove the tang from the tank, put it in a quaranting tank and treat it there. Save's on money for treatment, saves other livestock from getting the same disease, and makes for a healthier tank in the long run

Don't administer medication in the display tank. The only two remedies for Ich that people trust doing in their display tanks are garlic extracts and ginger. Both have been reported to rid Ich and are beneign, so I'd give it a shot. For ginger, people just slice up thin pieces of ginger and soak it with the food. Garlic extracts can be bought at local health food stores and it's either used by soaking foods in the extract or administering it into the tank directly (although personally I don't agree with the latter practice).

An upcoming feature article in September's www.advancedaquarist.com will be worth reading as well (should be published shortly).

Because it's newly introduce, it's probably just stressed and succumbed to illness. If the tank is in good, stable condition, fish generally heal themselves.

Although some people are comfortable with having the ich parasite (cryptocaryon irritans) present in their tanks, remember that you now have a good oppertunity to eradicate the parasite since you only have one fish to take care of.
Many people have had fish die from ich even though they fed garlic and had perfect water conditions (according to lengthy ich threads on various boards). I think it is generally agreed though that garlic will help the fish combat the parasite, but due to the life cycle of the parasite there is only a limited chance for getting rid of it completely this way.

Since you have already introduced the parasite to your aquarium (probably via the fish), you will need to do 2 things to eradicate the parasite. Put the fish in a hospital tank and lower the specific gravity to 1.009. Leave the main tank fishless for 5 to 6 weeks.

If the main tank is fishless for the specified period, the parasite will die due to lack of a host.

See fx http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-08/sp/index.htm
for more info on the parasite.

:( Joej,
seems like everyone is scientific today.what i did and i think it worked(i dont know if it did or not) I bought a cleaner golbi, an ultra voilet light(to kill paracites),and a grounding rod(to get rid of that static) it also helps reduce stress for the fish.good luck!
