Tank has been running for about 5 weeks since the addition of the live rock. Today the PH just took off went from 8.4 where its been sitting upto 9.4

The only new addition is a torch coral.Everything else is just part of the cleaner crew. What is the best way to handle this?

thanx for the help

What do you use to check the pH? A torch and a few cleaning crew won't have that much effect on the pH.... :?

Check your pH again with a different kit or bring a sample of water to your LFS for testing if you can. If you're using a pH probe/monitor of some kind, recalibrate it, check the batteries/power supply, etc. and take another reading. Something doesn't sound right there...

The test kit shows the water is okay at 8.3, but...

The ph probe reads the calibration fluids and the makeup saltwater reserve correctly. There is someting about the tank water that is causing a problem.

Finally after staying up till 2 in the morning watching everything act "just fine" in the tank and the fact that I can stand being outsmarted by a machine I finally check the troubleshooting guide......duh.......

................Tank ground loop.

Problem solved. Live and learn everyday.

It is commone, and you wish that they acutally put the warning on the first page of the manuel.

This problem is one reason some people always take a sample of water front the tank, and test the pH on the sample, instead of dipping the probe into the tank.
