It's hard to judge right now based on the limited data set we have. Trusting manufacturers' statements is, as you know, not very wise.

Inland Reef Aquaria will be conducting a comprehensive study of salts shortly that should clear up a lot of the present confusion and heresy.

make sure you post it here. i bought the synth stuff because it had all kinds of trace elements and iodine and strontium and things in it that sounded good (saw them as recommended addatives on livestock sites), bt i don't know if it's actually paying off yet.

Inland Reef is a online retailer that has been very progressive with getting important studies done for hobbyists' benefit. They have been responsible for several independant and significant studies in the past. Check out http://www.inlandreef.com/testing.html

I'm not saying don't necessarily trust mfg's statements, but take it with a grain of salt (pun intended ;)) It's no different then any other product.

Why do you find this study very disturbing? It's going to shed light on exactly what is in the salts we buy, making us more informed customers.

Why the ref. to the S15 Report? The person helping me with my tank felt that a hardness problem could be related to the fact that the tank was filled with Instant Ocean, which he claimed lacked Mag. I was going to contact Instant Ocean- as tirre bag had no analysis on it. When I typed Instant Ocean into Google- up popped the S15 report. I guess there is no truth in advertising in aquar. supplies. I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on this report or experiences with the salts they are using. Dawn.

A few interesting things to note:
Instant Ocean vs. Reef Crystals debate - There seems to be a trend starting where the manufacturer is decr. the trace minerals in instant ocean in an attempt to move ppl over to the more expensive reef crystals salt. This kinda came to a head at the recent aquarium products show. It isn't being spread a lot, but a representative friend of mine definitely said that they are slowly making those of us who care about reef-keeping either move over to reef crystals or start using more supplements. Sucks the big one. (His quote!)
