Protein Skimmers

Hello All,

I am getting ready to change my 46 bow into a reef tank and had a question on protien skimmers. The tank is Not reef ready so I am going to go with a "Hang-On" Skimmer.

Does anyone have any recommendations on which on to use and also How noisey are they? Thee tank will ne in the living room, so noise level is a concern.

Personally, I try to stay away from "reef-ready" tank especially if it got the sump build-in on the back of the tank.

Anyway, two model that I had use are CPR BakPak and AquaC Remora/R. Pro. Both are good skimmers. AquaC is more noisy, but both are not that ignoring that they bother me at all. I have tanks in my living room too.

i use the aquac remora it's all good in the hood. the noise is louder at first, until it starts actually skimming (foaming). it's not that bad, mine is in my livingroom.

My remora pro was too noisy for me, so I moved it to the sump, but now I have put in cooling fans, and they are noisier than the skimmer was, so I can't win.

Depends on your expected bio load. Algae problems are always more annoying than any noise from equipment. If a heavy load go w/ the remora pro or that new big dog Bak Pak. a little noise smokes having hair algae

I use an AquaC remora on my 46 bow with no problems.

I have a remora which was horribly noisy. At the time, they only
came with the Rio pump. This pump would also never restart easily.

I recently replaced it with the Maxijet. The noise is now much, much quieter. It is still not silent, but it is not out of line with other common
fishtank noises.
