salinity-temp ?

I am hearing differences in water temp as well as salinity levels for reefs. What are my parameters? What is ideal? Thanks! :roll:

Current thinking is that maintaining a salinity similar to a natural reef is best for your inverts. That puts you at an SG of around 1.025 to 1.026 (salinity of about 35 - 36 PPT).

The temperature thing is another on-going debate. People seem to have success with anything from high 70s to mid 80s. I'd recommend something around 80-81 degrees.

Truth is, reef organisms are tolerant of a relatively wide range. I generally aim for natural seawater levels for salnity, which is about 1.025-1.026 (or 35ppt). For temperature, however, I prefer running my tank a bit lower then natural reefs (depending on who you read, it's 80-84 degrees). I run mine at 78-82 because I find it's easier to maintain my reefs at these temperatures due to lower metabolisms.

Thanks, my temp is at 82 and 1.024 Specific gravity. I guess both are within range so to speak!

I've been told to run my reef between 74-78 degrees from my LSF. I started running mine at 78, now I have lowered it to 76. Everything seems to be doing fine.

When I first started they also told me to run my tank at this temp. I've had it about 78-82 for the last year with no problems..aside from my heater going out and my whole tank getting ick during the winter :x

interesting question because im currently running mine at 76 degrees, its been at 76 since i got the tank about a year ago, havent had any problems so far but still curious

kokxy it depends on where you are from and were most of the corals are from.most corals are senitive to stress, if you have some one come out and do a water change for you, keep it at that salinity, if not pick one that most of your corals are close too. remember letting water evaporate to much will also change the salinity in your tank :wink:

I keep mine 29°C and 35ppt. To my knowledge, I am the only one in my country to have such high tank temp. :twisted:
