i have a question i hope someone can help me with?i have a yellow tang bought 2 weeks ago it seems to be alright most of the time but occasionally looks as though he's trying to get something off him.took a close look seems he has tiny black specks on both sides does anyone know what that might be? cant find any info on that issue.some help would be great.i'll tell you water param: grav:1.024 temp:80 ph: 8.2 i have no nitrates at all use only penguin dual biowheel 2 pro head 3 power heads no skimmer but have had tank set up for 8 months without any water problems use r/o water.

I believe this might be what is referred to as "black ich" although I have no first hand experience with it. I think it's caused by some type of parasitic flatworm. This could probably be effectively treated with hyposalinity in a quarantine system.

I'm sure someone else will have some better advice for you soon, but in the meanwhile, a few more details might help diagnose the cause of the problem:

Is the fish eating well (and what is it eating)?
What size tank is this fish in?
What other fish (and how many) are in the tank?

My yellow Tang developed ick, after a few day's the spots left its fins but the white spots on the body changed to black. I did clear up after a full week of treatment. Cleaner shrimp may help dispose of it faster.

Have you tried nori or Seaweed Selects soaked in garlic extract? It does wonders.

Yellow tangs need plenty of vegatable matter in their diets. I recommend using romaine lettuce only in a pinch. I had a yellow tang for 5 years. He would eat the romaine and the nori, but for some reason, he went crazy for the green Seaweed Selects.

BTW mine had it but it seemed to have dissappeared...and tangs need a pretty strict vegie diet or they will lose color, so ive read...if you can try seaweed delight by BMG Innovations...My Tang loves it...she (so my wife says) just tears it up....

Really? I bought a Yellow Tang Monday. I bought some Green Seaweed and clip it inside the tank. But for about the last 2-3 days, when I feed my other fish the brine shrimp, he eats just as much as my clowns and puffer do. I hope he stay yellow...

Freshwater dips eradicate black spot disease VERY well/easily.
Repeat after me (like a mantra, my friends)... QUARANTINE ALL FISH.

Also, as is being alluded to with the comments about diet, any fish that is in full, robust health will generally not experience, let alone succumb, to disease. Diet and water quality are the biggest issues aquarists have to deal with, but also, you cannot ignore all the other stressors involved in being a fish (inter/intraspecific aggression, for instance).

The best way (practically the only way) to prevent introduction of pathogens into the main system is to religiously quarantine. Please see the current ich thread to understand (though this poor bloke has suffered not from his ignorance, but that of his roommate's) the importance of quarantine.

Cheeky Monkey, while the yellow tang may eat brine (eck, sm hates brine and is hoping you at least soak it in Selcon or Zoe), this doesn't mean that's all it eats. Have you also tried different meaty foods with your fish? Fresh chopped squid, clam, shrimp, and krill just to start (restaraunt quality/food grade is the best and most cost effective way to go).

However! This is NOT to say that you must keep your tang to a "strictly" veggie diet. It is to say that variety is key. I believe in offering all the animals a variety of foodstuffs, and leave out the "junk" foods like brine. I swear to God, I think brine are like the Pringles of the aquatic world... LOULE!! Heh.. I love Pringles. 8O

Edited to note post weirdness to say that for some reason I could actually delete this one!

Also, JohnD, I worked at the LBAOP for a while in the coral lab and tropical quarantine areas, and all the tangs (actually, any fish in such systems that wanted it) were given romaine daily. They macked on it, too! If anyone's ever been to the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, I think they'd agree that this place sports some seriously FAT TANGS.

Yes, you are right on the tang eating brine shrimp...but that should not be its main diet....mine eats brine also, but i try to make sure she(or he) eats algae or dried seaweed....Now what i have read is, that they can or have a tendancy to lose color if not fed a proper vegie diet...i tend to believe my books and indirectly quote them... :wink:

Seamaiden is correct.
Do a freshwater dip and it will remove all the black ich (flukes).
All tangs need lots of algae and frequent feedings daily. The best food IME are the spirulina algae wafers or discs that drop to the bottom of the tank. The exceptions are the kole tang which needs film algae and the regal or blue tang which is a meateater.

Yellow tangs are great for tanks of more than 75 gallons because they come from Hawaii. They are not cyanide caught Philippine or Indonesian fish.
