I am retired and after visiting my son and seeing his reef tank I am thinking about setting up my own. I have been doing quite a bit of reading. I will not be starting anything untill December or so. But I am confused as to why I have seen glowing reports on setting up a tank using the Eco-system filter but no one is suggesting it for a newbie? I am thinking about an all glass 120gal using this system would this be too much for me?

Hey,

Sorry we didn't respond to your question earlier. You posted it in the announcement thread and it appears everyone overlooked it up in there. I've split your post off to be its own topic now, so I'm sure you'll get the responses that you were looking for :)

Personally, I think the ecosystem model is overly hyped. Some people swear it works, but some have had negative results because of the Miracle Mud. It would seem the glowing literature for it is really mostly marketing. From what I hear, the original ecosystem SPS tank is not doing very well nowadays (if it's still up and running).

In my opinion, stick with the tried and true method of a standard protein skimmer. I'm still a fan of Deep Sand Beds (DSBs) but there is a growing movement against them. My DSB has been running well for nearly a decade now, if that says anything.

I agree with Len. For new comers, it is better to stick with something that does not involves "miracle." Besides, it is not cheap enough for most people to try and give up without discouragement in both spirt and wallet.

The tried and true method is protein skimmer, limited nutrient input and water change. No magic, no miracle, no hype.

I agree. Fads come and go in this hobby. Learn the
tried and true basics, go slowly, and you'll have a
great tank for years after the fads have long gone.
