ideas for 50 gallon

First, I'd suggest a good book or two. Also, check out our Beginner's Guide.

The Beginner's Guide will help you figure out what you need. Generally speaking, good lights, good water circulation, good skimmer, and good live rock/sand is the basic parts of the usual, successful reef tank. Check out Chris' link. There's also a thread at the top of this forum titlled "Reefs.org's Guide to Information" that is VERY rich in info for new hobbyists. Let us know if you have any particular questions.
