Plans for my new sump.

I'm planning to upgrade my tank to a 5ftx2x2 with a 30" glass sump, here is a rough design for the sump.

Are there any other things I should think of, or add to the sump.

I have never designed one before, and have made this from pics I have seen on the net.

The bioballs are unnecesary and IMO should be removed. Live rock and sand will more then be adequete for biological filtration. Same thing goes for the filter floss. There's nothing wrong with mechancial filtration, per se. But you'll find youself replacing it every week and that might drive you nuts

I'd personally do a simple sump with only a skimmer as filtration. You can use the foam insert if you'd like since they will help reduce bubbles from entering your return pump, but it will likely need regular cleaning. I personally use a series of baffles to stop bubbles from going into my pump.

One thing else I forgot to suggest. After getting rid of the bioballs, I'd move the heater into that section. Glass heaters should not be placed where a lot of air might possibly be passing around it. The water from the downpipe and the output of the skimmer might create a condition where the glass heater is too rapidly cooled which will result in it shattering.

sorry to butt in, but what material would you use as baffles to reduce bubbles?

Acrylic

Either of these can be siliconed in so that water goes over one baffle and under the other then over the next. etc..

A big negative on that. People actually use plexiglass (which is a form of scrylic) as their main tank. Crazy isnt it??? 8O

I am curious to why everyone always says to remove filter floss or similair media because you will have to change it on a regular basis. Isn't it positive to remove any particles from the water you can? I know that if you do not change it pretty regularly that it will break down in the water. It helps "polish " your water though and remove waste from the water?
