I've noticed that several of my fish are scratching and I want to do a freshwater dip. Need to know salinity parameters for a freshwater water dip and for what length of time? I know that pH and temp. should be the same as in main tank. Being new to SW (3months) and not having an expert at any LFS is making it hard to find out. Thanks for any help.

Hi, and ....

You'll love saltwater, I promise you ;) And hopefully you'll find all the answers your looking for here.

The proper specific gravity for hypo dip is 1.009 or a little lower. Slowly lower the QT tank's specific gravity of tankwater over 2-3 days. Once you reach 1.009, you can start counting down from 30 days, the required period.

Hope that helps :)

Where's my welcome Len? Almost 100 posts and counting. :(

Sally, Len should have asked what kind of fish you have. They don't all do well in hypo or in freshwater dips.

1. make sure it is really 1.009. Too high and you just stress the fish while the ich lives. Get down to 1.007 and the fish will be dead in a few days.

2. Not to discourage you from using hypo, it has worked for me in the past, but I have had two clowns in 1.009 SG for three weeks and they still show signs of ich. I'm switching to copper.

Good Luck
