I have a 135 gallon tank. 100 pounds of live rock, 2 250 12k metal halide
My tank was originally going to be a fish only tank so I put a skimmer/ wet dry combo system on it and since have put the live rock in it about 4 months ago. The coraline algae hasn't yet taken off but I have lots of little feather duster things and balls of green and brown hair(I belive) algea. My quesiton is I know wet dry is not necessary but since it is a combo unit am I hurting anything by keeping it set up. My phosphate are a .1 ppm everything else is normal. I do have some mushroom coral and 8-10 small to medium fish with turbo snails, brittle and serpent stars as well as hermit. :?

I would just remove the bio balls from the wet dry. They tend to be nitrate traps.

I wonder where your phosphate is coming from? Are you overfeeding? Are you using RO water?

BTW, Welcome to Reefs.org :D

Slowly take out the balls over a few weeks time like 1/4 every week to let the bb build up and not shock your tank. Dunno where the phosphate is coming from though sorry

thanks for the advice, I do have a slight level of phosphate in my tap water. Is it necessary to get an RO unit if so what one do I need for the least amount of money. I don't want to go overkill but I don't want to go cheap either.

This company has good RO/DI units, great prices and excellent customer service. I highly recommend them.

I have a 75GPD 5 stage RO/DI and it serves my needs very easily. What is most important is to make sure you get the DI cartridge and then just decide how many GPD you need.
