I am slowly setting up my reef tank and I was able to get my hands on 100 lbs of southdown from HD in Danvers Ma.

I have seen a “vinegar test” spoken of before to see it the aggregate foams or not. Does anyone have any more info to share on this? :?: Being a newbie  I just want to test the sand to see the reaction (just for S&G’s).

Thanks for any input!

The test relies on the fact that ca. carbonate will dissolve in low pH solvent. Vinegar and other mild acid is sufficient for the effect. As ca carb. is dissolving, CO2 is released.

You can also make a 'sploder using vinegar and baking soda in an empty soda bottle.

It should bubbles if you use Southdown, since Southdown sand is calcium carbonate.

If what you want is calcareous substrate, then you want it to foam.

And yes, generally we use a 2-liter bottle, but you can use any size you wish. Just be ready for BIG BOOM!

2 liter bottle is dead.

also use: dry ice and water

also use: water, lye and tinfoil

* never let the lye mix explode on you or any living thing lol

** we used to toss the dry ice ones into the river, weighted down with rocks. sweet.
