I have a 135 gallon with 2 25- 12k metal halide on the out side to which I added 2 65 pc compacts in the middle in the last 2 weeks to cure the void of light I had in the middle section of the tank and I got a recent outbreak of green algea turning to brown. My phosphate level is .1 and I have a medium to remove it and have a ro/di unit on the way. What else can I do to help the situation. All my other tests are normal. Yes I do have hair algea :x I am building a 30 gallon sump as well and would like any suggestions as how to build it. It is a 30 gallon 4 footx12 inch tank(shallow) and would like any sugesstions. Thanks :?

Hmmm, I am not sure if your algae turning to brown has anything to do with the addition of 2x65W PC.

You said the green algae turning to brown? What kind of green algae? Can you elaborate "turning into brown"? Is it dying off? or is it being coated by cynobacteria?

Not really sure what kind of algea it is. It didn't show up until the light was put in. That 2 foot area of the hood didn't have any light in it so the middle part of the tank was a little shaded. The algea is just the kind that you scrape off the glass on a regular basis. :?

I'd look more to that phosphate than the light, though you can certainly try leaving the new lights off a few days and see how that works out for you.

Algae needs light and a nitrogen source. You are obviously going to have gobs of light in a reef tank. :D So not much to be done about that.
So, look toward the nutrients. Do a water change, this sometimes helps immensely.

I made my own sump out of a glass 60 gallon aquarium for my latest tank as well. I just siliconed in a divider for the skimmer compartment on one end, (this is where the water enters the sump as well). The water then flows over into the middle compartment which is the fuge, and is the largest area. Then another divider at the other end with holes in it, this is where the return pump sits. I made this one out of acrylic to make drilling the holes easier. The other I had cut at a glass shop. The tank is basicaly divided into 3 sections. The middle space is the fuge with a 6" sand bed, rocks, calupera, etc. :)
Very simple, but it works great. If I was to buy a ready made sump/fuge this size (which they don't even make) it would have cost easliy $600.

Cheers
Jim
