Ok several members recommend this test and I see why but I cant seem to understand how to get a good measurement from it. I add the correct amount of ingrediants as the package indicates but this is my question.

When I add the last dropper in and the color starts to change is that when I stop and take the reading or when it turns aqua blue in color? Also, there is alot of air in the sringe, do I take the reading at the airline which is lower or at the black gasket on the siringe? It makes a huge difference in the reading.

Sorry just REALLY confused about ho to read this test.

I don't remember the color issue.

If you have air in the syringe, just keep in mind you just need to find out the ammount of titrant you dispense. so make sure you do the reading using consistent method.

Furthermore, make sure the air does not get out during the titration. If you did force air out during the process, it will give you wrong reading.

The best way to do it is to make sure you don't draw in air. Or do what nurses do to get the air out... I am sure you have seen how they do it.... ouch!

I found that the air you see is just what was in the long tip you attached to the syringe. It really doesn't affect the reading as long as it stays next to the plunger because it just fills the long tip with air as it leaves the syringe.

As far as the color, its your best guess but either way you know within 10-20 ppm.

Hope that helps

I've never used Saliferts calcium test, I use Seachems but it sounds like they're real similar.

I take my reading when it has turned fully blue. By experience I can generally tell what it's going to read when I start getting close, but until you've developed that familiarity it's probably best to stick to reading it when it turns fully blue.

Hope that helps...

I had the same question awhile back, u should take the reading at the level of the black stopper, as for the air i think that have accounted for that in their calculations because of the air in the tip of the little yellow plastic tip. 8O

Hi,
I use Saliferts all the time and at first they are a little confusing. When you fill the syringe, the liquid should be at like .80 or .82. Don't suck air into the syringe or your readings will be off. The difference in the liquid level and the plunger is because of the tip. Just make sure that the black plunger is at 1.0.
As far as color changes go, I keep titrating with the syringe until the color changes to blue and stays there. As you add a drop out of the syringe, the pink will turn blue and then go back to pink. Add another drop and keep doing this until the color is a constant blue. Then that is where I stop and check the black rubber plunger to get my reading.
