I have a rather large Eheim bucket filter (450 gal p/h) I am currently using on my freshwater tank. I have planned to get rid of my freshwater friends all together and was hoping I could use this filter for my new reef.

I have however planned to go for a Live rock/sand filtration system and was thinking about clearing the media from my Eheim and just using it as a pump to re supply the main tank from the sump. I was thinking I could maybe fill the filter with carbon & wool etc to help purify the water.

Will all this help or should I just forget about using the Eheim and just get a std pump!?

I don't think the canister would work well in that application - the pumps in those units aren't intended for much head pressure. They sorta rely on the syphon of the incoming line to help overcome the return head (like closed loop setups) which you would not have using it as a return pump.

Personally, I would ditch the canister filter and get a good return pump and a good skimmer.

HTH - Hope That Helps

:)

Mace, a lot of people have varying opinions on pumps. I bought velocity t4's because they are quiet, but they add a lot of heat to your tank.

Some people prefer the Mag drive pumps, some people prefer Iwaki, etc etc... It all depends on what you are looking for....
