I have got a line on a new circ pump but it is made of stainless steel. I know the rule of thumb is no metal, but is a stainless steel pump OK?
Any help would be appriciated.
Thank you
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Even high grade stainless steel (like surgeical stainless) will corrode eventually in saltwater. I believe CSL Velocity pumps have (or had at some time) stainless steel bearings and they always seized up on me in less then 6 months.
Right. Most stainless steel are not made for the saltwater environment, unless it is 100% SS316L grade. Maybe if you give us the spec. of the pump, we can give you more comment about it?
Len,
I am getting this pump virtually for free and is brand new. Will it be detrmental to the inhabitants if I use it for a couple of months? I am just starting out.
I do not have the specs but if you go to Grundfos.com It is a up series recirc pump for hot water systems STainless steel model #up25-64sf 60 hrtz if this helps
Thank you
Yeah, if any saltwater touches anything made of brass you will poison your tank. Brass is an alloy that contains copper. Copper is toxic to invertebrates and at higher levels to fish. This type of pump is based on the old QUIET ONE series by rainbow lifegaurd. They will heat up your water as they are water cooled pumps. I had trouble with my Quiet Ones. Sometimes the shafts would sieze up. Not a very good pump for saltwater applications. You may be able to run it for a few months before you start having trouble but I wouldn't risk it.
