I have what very well might be the most retarded question that has ever crossed this forum.

How useful would a say 30 gal tank with 40-50 lbs of live rock and a dsb be with power head. holding the heater on skimmer like a norm sump. but instead of using an overflow just haveing a sub pump in it? I know it would not be as good as a propper sump but it would help would it not?

Welcome.I`m not sure I understand the question,are you talking about not having an overflow on your main tank and having a pump move your water to the sump and then pump it back?

And yeah, I have no idea what your getting at; therein lies the definition of a "dumb question"... A question that cannot be simply understood and processed isnt a dumb one; it gains the title of progressively unsolved mystery, whereas genuinely "hard" questions may not sound dumb, but follow the same guidlines!
Now THAT is a dumb answer, if you follow the same rules as above!

Instead of an overflow, have a pump pumping water into the sump, then another pumping it back up into the tank, which is not a good idea.

However, a sump ABOVE the tank gravity feeding back into the tank would be fine.

As peej has responded its not a good idea. You really should have an overflow box or have your tank plumbed with an internal overflow to connect to your sump. Omitting the overflow and using 2 submersible pumps is asking for trouble. You will end up with your tank empty and a coral reef swimming pool where your living room use to be....
