hey guys, i just setup a 48g tank with DI, southdown and IO. I have a powerhead and heater in there along with a penguin filter... my tank has been very cloudy for 2 days... I know it can take weeks to settle but I was just wondering if it is ok to use the carbon filter pads that the penguin uses to clear up the cloudiness??? Currently, the penguin flter does not have the carbon filters nor the biowheels in place.... Thanx for all the help!!!

It wont hurt, some people like that really fine southdown, personally I hate it, the stuff wont sit still.

Keep in mind, it'll plug up really really fast. do you have a timeline for adding some live rock yet? That'll help the southdown settle, but I'm asuming you already have lights & a skimmer.

Carbon is fine for saltwater use. The floating debris, however, are better removed with mechanical filtration such as filter floss or Polyfilters.

BTW, I've found most of the media that comes prepackaged for power filters aren't made of the best material. I prefer to add a bag of high-quality carbon instead, such as Seachem's Matrix Carbon or TLF's hydrocarbon.

Oh! Be sure you check the media daily and rinse them out in filtered water once they get clogged. I think you'll find that after the first day any media you add will be positively coated in white goo. Just give it a good rinse in the di and replace. Should last a couple of weeks like that, depending on the media you use and it will stop things from clogging up.

Good luck!
