Tank Circulation QUestions

I'm a newbie and would like to know y'alls opinion on powerheads vs. closed loop circulation. I did the search (like a good newbie should) and found several threads, but the pics had been erased.

In tankpowerheads, recommendations? Seems Maxi-jet is the pump of choice for use with wave makers.

External pumps/closed loop?

I did see where myreef had posted some pics of his external system, but the pics have long since disappeared. Still have them, anyone?

Any ideas, pictures, opinions, etcc.. would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, my first attempt will be a 55 gal.,no oveflow. I have a 225 gal. tank on order that I would like to setup next summer/fall. The big tank will have two 1.5" overflows and two 1" returns. In both instances, I will be setting up a reef tank.

For the big tank you going to have, definitely go for close loop if you have the time and resources. At least you will get more flow out of the same energy input, and that advantage is one big enough for most people with that tank size.

For small tank like the 55 gal, close loop can be more effort than it worth, but that's just my opinion. Did you search the General Forum for the pics?

I found the original thread, but no pics. It was a pretty old thread. I'll use powerheads for the small tank since it's not drilled. Really looking for input on the large tank. 10 or so powerheads seems a bit excessive! So I guess I'm really lookig for input from those with some experience on closed loop circulation/surge systems. I'm an engineer, we love pictures and diagrams and such. Also a journeyman plumber, so I can do the work, just looking for ideas.
