Dumb question, I know. I recently purchased a new tank, a 50 gal acrylic, and i am in the process of moving everything from my old 20. i need MORE substrate to form a dsb, and when i wnt to yardright.com, which used to be Southdown, it says that their tropical play sand is not safe for aquarium use? Why not? I have heard that it compacts down too much.

This southdown and aquarium issue was dissused many times. Do a search on the keywords, and you will find more than you ever wanted to know.

Basically, it has to do with liability and non-competition agreement with another sand packing company in the aquarium trade.

There are some people having problem with playsand, but the problem is not particular to the brand.

Forget about it. Get yourself some Carb-Sea sand. You'll thank me later!

I did the Carb-Sea also. Just be ready for a snowstorm for a time.
