Hi all, I'm new @ this, and have a 42 gal tank. 20lb live sand + 20lb LR, skimmer, cycled for about 5 weeks. Ph~8.2 Am~0 Nitrite~0 SG1.022.
Just bought a few snails to test the water. Acclimated them over 3 hours, slowly add water to the bag in tank....
They seem to be ok few hours after I drop them in, but in the morning, they all climbed either @ or just above water line... Not very lively what's wrong?...

Help, Thx,

In my previous tank before I moved I had about 30 snails. I would say that at any given time there were 5 or 6 that would hang out above the water line, usually in the corners. They were mostly the nerite snails that did this. I dunno if its normal or not either, but it didn't seem to hurt them as they would go back down in a day or so.

This is normal behavior for certain snail species. Also, IME some snails will do this for the first couple of days to couple of weeks in the tank and then stop, or at least not do it as frequently.

My astrea snails did the same thing at first. After a coupke of days they all came down. From time to time I see one or two up there, though. My other snails also go up the glass, but usually sit an inch or so below the waterline.

I have only recently set up my 75G as well. I have snails that I have moved like 5 or 6 times from 4 different tanks.

They do the same thing every time. I had one peeking at me over the top of my overflow last week he had a threatening letter.

"If you move us again you &$^#%# we're organizing and reclaiming all our peoples shells from the hermits. We won't be held down by "The Crab"

I read an article on acclimating snails once (sorry I forgot where) where you can take many hours just as you did, then when placing them in the tank hold them at the waterline and let them attach to the tank and ease into the water at their leisure. I do it.. It seems to make sense since they head out of new water anyway.
