Canister filters for reef tanks ... bad idea ?

Ive been reading posts that suggest canister filters are a poor choince for reef tanks. Is this because all the debris get trapped in the filter and the is returned into the water ? If this is true, can I keep my canister filters running without any meadia for water movement? Thanks.

You could keep them, but I would remove them and replace them with a couple of powerheads for water movement.

Canister filters aren't bad, per se, but they aren't the best for reef tanks. Carbon needs to be replaced every 2 weeks or so and the mechanical and bio media does tend to trap organics which should be cleaned out regularly.

Ya, you can run it empty and use it as a circulation device if you wish to.
