Hi,

I was wondering what would be on the list of equipment for a fish only marine tank? Im not going to be living at home much longer now, but want to start on Marines sooner rather than later. Also, im hoping to keep the tank etc when I move and hopefully this will reduce the initial outlay of cost on equipment.

I have searched the forums and so far havent come up with much - but a magazine I have has pointed me in this direction:

2x thermostatically controller heaters (one as a backup)
1x digital thermometer
2x biological filters (1 chemical, 1 biological)
Powerheads... not sure how many, it doesn't say
1x Protein skimmer
Lighting - apparently this is not as specific if your not keeping a reef
1x RO unit

Is that 'all' I would need, and will I need to do any plumbing for a tank like this? Im looking at a 4 foot tank for reference.

Any help greatfully appreciated!

If you have live rock and live sand this will be you biological filters. When you chose a skimmer get the best one you can because this will be the most important part of you tank. I don't think you need to worry about PHs as much with a FO As for lights you could just use a strip light with a 50/50 in it, that is what I used when I started my tank but upgraded a month later when I started with the reef :) I only have 1 heater as of now and just a reg thermometer

forgive my ignorance but won't live rock and sand require special lighting?

I have been looking at a skimmer - the Deltec TS1250, which does: Normal Stocking 750 Ltrs (750 USgals) - im presuming this would be adequate for 4 / 6 foot x 1.5 foot height x 1 foot depth?

No special lighting required for LR or LS,my 108g FOWLR tank runs with 200# of LR (no LS,to messy) and a Euro-reef skimmer, thats it,4x36w compacts and 4x30 NO Flourescents (the compacts arent needed,i just like it brighter)....good luck......Riot....

For just a fish tank that is not overstocked this is what I had

tank
heater
reg thermometer
cheapo test kit for marines
some sand for the bottom <1/2"
skimmer
some cheapo decorations
some sort of filter that you can run carbon in
swing arm Hydrometer
Salt (not table salt) hehe

As you get more and more into it you can get more "real", as in getting live rock, and a dsb if you want

But to have just fish, its not that much different from a freshwater tank

Do not skimp on the skimmer though

I had a tank years ago that was set up like this.

Powerfilter(bio,chemical,mechanical)
Normal Fllourescent light
Heater
Thermometer
coral sand
Air Pump with stone
Tuffa Rock
Nitrate,Ammonia,and Nitrite Test
Hydrometer

You must do water changes with this set up at least once per month(20 percent)
