in my humble opinion, waste of time..

i used to have this skimmer, until one day the "bubbler" stopped working. i got it to work again, but then the suction cups started to lose their grip, etc etc etc. in the end, i just got tired of fiddling with it.

i replaced this skimmer with an AquaC Remora. it works really well. i also have a CPR BakPak 2 and that works good too.

The general rule is to get the best skimmer you can afford. I would recommend something a little better than that one. You can get the Red Sea Prizm Pro for like $80 now, and that would probably be a much better deal. Also the CPR backpack is around $125 or so, another good choice. I dont know how much a remora is but those seem to be the most popular hang on skimmers in these forums

I have used a couple different skimmers and the AquaC Remora line is a great skimmer. I would go with one of those. IMO

I run both a bakpak and a remora on my smaller tanks. IMHO the remora pulls out more junk, but you can put a heater and a grounding probe inside the bakpak. That gives the tank a 'cleaner' look. Either are good for smaller tanks.

I've bought both of these skimmers from other reefs.org board members for less than $90.00 each.

I have a bakpak that isn't doing anything except being in my way. let me know if you are interested and we can maybe work out a deal.

I agree.

You can put one in the Remora too (I've done it). Just run the cords up and out of the outflow opening so water can't follow the cord and drip.

I love my remora. It's a great skimmer for the price, if you decided to go with one, I think you would be really happy with it. They are really easy to maintain and do a great job.

Which one is a better skimmer the red sea prizm or the cpr backpack. Ill be using this on a 30gal fish only tank with no wetdry just live rocks. I really cant afford the remona right now and am just looking for a cheaper alternative.

The prizm sucks for that size tank. The bakpak2 is marginally better. I'm not sure why you'd spend the eighty dollars on the prizm and not save up for a couple of extra weeks and spend the 169$ on a remora... Have you checked e-bay auctions for used remoras? You might find one on there in your price range and they really are a better skimmer. In the long run, the money spent on a prizm or bakpak will be a waste because you will be replacing it.

Good luck,
J.

ChrisRD - I'll have to check out your suggestion.

dlai531 - The bakpak is not a bad skimmer. I bought one from a reefs.org member for less than $90.00 excluding shipping.

Side by side, the remora is a better skimmer than the bakpak. However, the remora will set you back a few extra buck. For a 30 gallon tank, the bakpak IMHO is NOT a bad skimmer.

Check out this board and ebay for a used bakpak.

Go to www.proteinskimmer.com and find the contact number there. Call and ask for a guy named Jason (the President) and ask him if he has any blemished models lying around. MOre than likely he will say yes and will be willing to sell it to you cheap. Thats how I got mine (except I found his building instead and went to talk to him Personnally) Very cool guy, Likes Pearl Jam, and Surfing

Always buy the best skimmer you can afford is
good advice. Buy the best skimmer you can get
even if you can't afford it! You won't regret it.
Cheap skimmers are crap, a waste of money.
With skimmers, you get what you pay for.

I have use the Prizm and the Cyclone 150. I have had few problems with my Cyclone. You must keep the airway clean....(easy fix).....and keep your water level at least 2-3 inches over the intake. I would never get another Prizm. I am considering a Remora pro or Bakpak2 for my 50 gallon....tough decision.

it is the VISI-JET-PS that I am wondering about

You planning on using this in any sort of "reef" configuration? - In other words, you gonna have live rock?

If the answer is yes, then look up the acronym POS. Hint: It ain't Point Of Sale......

I had one of these on a fish-only rig (no live rock) running with a Magnum 350 canister (using the "micron" sleeve) and I was ok for a couple years even with minimal water changes having crammed a baby niger trigger and a pair of damnsels into a 30 gallon.

But you can bet your first and last born I'll NEVER do any of the above EVER again...

Hope that answers your question... :D

Well I ended up getting a Prism delux in sump skimmer for $85. It seems to work good. I will use this till spring and bisiness picks back up and I have money to play with then I will buy a better one :)
