225 gal., 70" x 24" X 30" deep. Getting ready to start my hood and lights. Was thinking 3 - 250W or 400W MH. 6500 K along with 4 or 6 ft. 50/50 or pure actinic VHO. Maybe 2 or 4 of the 6 footers. Want to be set up for SPS/clams in the long run. Suffcient light? Need a couple of regular florescents for morning/evening? Moonlighting?Recommendations?

Thanks,

I would go with the 400's since your tank is 30" deep. That is really deep. Use supplemental actinics if you like that look. I do. I use Ushio 10K halides and URI VHO super actinics.

For moonlighting I would just use a porcelin socket with a 25W GE "party light" that comes in blue. Cheap and gives off glitter lines that makes the tank look cool at night.

Hi sambo, I am setting up at 240 Gal. tank that is also 30" deep. The lights I chose are 3 - 400w MH and 6 - 120w VHO TL03 actinics, I am going to run them with 2 icecap programmable timers for the actinic's. Hope this helps.

I would deffinately go with the 400w halides on a 30" deep tank, I have a 180 that is only 24" and love my 3 Ushios above it, and I have maxima on a small rock on the sand bed and he his happy as a clam(sorry bad joke) I also use 2 72" VHO Super R URI actinics for a little bit more floresence in the corals.

Hey, thanks for the advice. Are y'all using electronic ballasts? I've read they are the best/most adaptable, but expensive. Recommendations for ballasts/DIY stuff? I'm cheap, but not lazy!

I gotta admit though, I get lost quick in the lighting discussions. I hated my two elec. eng. classes. Icecap, Fulham, electronic, pulse, probe Ushio, Iwaski, M38, blah, blah, blah.......Can someone just give me a couple of choices and do the dirty work for me? LOL

I'm to the point now where I'm thinking 3 ea., 400W MH, electronic ballast, and 2 - 4 ea. 70" Actinics or 50/50's.
