Hello again, I would like to say that this is a great site. This is my dillema. I have been succesfully running a decent little nano for about 6 months. I have decided to take the plunge into full blown reef keeping. I only have about 6-7 hundred to initially drop on this little project. I would like to ask everyone's opinion on what type of system I should go with keeping im mind my funds. I know that I want between 30 and 50 gallons with enough lighting to pretty much be able to handle any kind of life. Im not very mechanical so the DIY stuff may not be great option. Some of it might work though. Thanks for the help. :)

go with a 75 if you can. There's not much difference between a 75 and a 50 price-wise, and you like the extra space.

Buy PC lights or vho to start with, your choice. They could always become your actinics when you get your MH.

Get a bigger skimmer than you think you'll need.

Buy as much used as you can. Save boatloads that way.

Check the newspapers, Ebay and such. They are great buys out there on used tanks and equipment. I have 6 tanks, even a 200gal. all bought used. I gave the lady $150 for it, and she was excited about getting it out of her garage! I was shaking, getting a like new tank for almost nothing.

yeah, i was in an lfs and saw 2 used 40 gallon tanks for sale...$19. I didn't need one but it was practically free so I got one anyway. Be patient and shop around. Part of your money should also go toward a good book or two. When you have a couple hours check out a bookstore and just sit down and read all the books that look interesting, and buy the one you think is most thorough. People here can recommend books also. If you really want lighting that will handle absolutely any life, that will take up half or three quarters of your funding. You may want to go with vho or PC's, which you can probably find for around $200. Again, check ebay and used sources...good luck!
