You see, that's what I love about this hobby. Debate, scientific findings and discussion among the masses. It's what grown-up science should be like :P

Righty, I agree with you on this one. The article poses a few hypotheses but no tangible theory, and certainly no fact. IMO it is unwise to publicly publish an opinion like this before serious scientific work has been done.

...and one more thing that bothered me:

The only motive force sufficient to move enough water through the rock, so that it may act as an efficient denitrating site, is the force generated by the animals, mostly the worms, living in their burrows

I'm thinking that the flagellate activity of more microscopic creatures would play a crucial role in water movements through the porous media.
