I have a 45 gallon with an IFS. It his been up and runing for just over four months now. I am thinking of adding activated carbon to the IFS to improve water clarity. Are there any drawbacks/negatives to using activated carbon? What other benefits, besides improved water clarity, does it provide?

Carbon is a very effective chemical absorbant. It'll help pull out yellowing compounds as well as nutrients. Buy good carbon like Two Little Fishes' Hydrocarbon or Seachem's Matrix Carbon; cheap carbons may actually leach nutrients.
