Whats your salinity at right now? - 1.021 - 1.025 is usually a safe range with a lot of folks sitting around 1.023..

Hope that helps,

It's at 1.023 right now...

Everything reads perfect but it seems like I have Turbo Sanils and 1 hermit crab that are dead...

Any ideas?

In addition to doing the obvious check on the tank vitals (ie. ammonia, nitrite, pH, temp, SG, etc.)...

How old is the tank?
How long have you had the hermits/snails in there?
How did you acclimate them when you introduced them?

Snails are reef critters and prefer a reef salinity of .25-.26.

You should also note that some varieties of turbos come from temperate waters of Mexico and slowly cook in our tanks - difficult to destinquish between the ones that are doomed to die and the ones that do OK.

Hope this helps.

Does a low salinity of 1.019 have any negative effects on fish inverts or coral? What would be considered brackish?

Brackish would be below 1.000, i think. Fish prefer a slightly lower salinity(1.019-1.025), and they are less susceptible to disease at that level. Inverts, however, prefer a sligthly higher salinity (1.024-1.029), so the trick is to keep it around the middle point of those. :D

BTW corals are included in 'inverts.'

Thank you! I'll try to raise slowly my salt level to 1.024 / 1.025 ish... It's now at 1.023...

In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by amilitary court for a crime they didnt commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum-security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the governement, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-TEAM.

Oops, I think they starved or were ill to begin with.

Sometimes when I'm in a bad mood I pop a snail between my fingers and give the hermits a really good meal.... poor cowries!!! LOL Joking.

Just to clear things up, pure water is 1.000. Brackish, which is usually where fresh meets salt, can be between 1.008 and 1.016. For your reef animals, just mimick the reef and you'll be safe with all reef animals. It's what they were made for. And if you do decide to change your perameters, do it gradually. I made the mistake when I first started of changing my salinity too fast from 1.022 to 1.024 and killed 3 snails in the process cause they are reeeaaallly sensitive to change. HTH

How long has the tank cycled? I think you over looked ChrisRD's questions? His aforementioned questions are very important, Id have to say your salinity is O.K.
