can you recommend a good skimmer?

Hi! I have a seaclone skimmer for our newly setup tank. We are currently cycling and don't have any fish yet, but have discovered from reading some posts that evidentally we don't have the best skimmer. Can anyone recommend one that they like that would be sufficient for a 55 gallon tank. We cannot have one that sits on the floor because we don't have a cabinent and I have a toddler that gets into everything! That's why we had chosen the seaclone, because it hung on the back....is there any one that's a good hang on the back skimmer?

Maybe this is the appropriate time to ask... I'm thinking about the aquac as well, but have heard good things about the bak-pak 2. AquaC is about 40 bucks more - is it worth it?

I hear its worth it, you wont be disappointed.. I have a bak pak 2r on my 20 gal and boy does it skim good, i love it!

Hmm I think the aquac or backpack is a good choice. If you dont need a hang on type I would get one of the small euroreef models, you wont be disapointed.

I prefer to avoid hang-on skimmers, but if you're going to use one, I think the Remoras are a good option. Personally in a heavily stocked 55 I might go for the larger Pro model.

IME the Remora will outperform the Bakpak on the same tank (but IMO the BakPak is a decent skimmer too).

The Excalibur, IIRC, is similar to the old Knop hang-on. Precision Marine makes a similar skimmer too (HOT-1 model). I owned a Knop years ago and it worked fine but was sensitive to overflowing peridocially. The PM HOT-1 is the best made and the best performer of the three.

if all else fails, oyu can always put the sump in a higher location...like on top of a canopy.

i am with Chris on the Euro-reef. if i am not mistaken they now make a hang on model, or was it a closed loop?
worth looking into, anyway

i believe the pm hot 1 is just like the excalibur excpet that it is easier to pull apart and clean. i owned the excalibur and got alot of use out of it. i wouldn't buy another though

I have owned a remora in the past.

They are SUPER easy to clean and maintain. Easy to install, easy to adjust. Best of all, the pump is a maxijet 1200... so if it burns out... it's super easy to replace. I also agree with Chris tho, if you have the extra cash to spend, the remora pro would be the way to go.

That said... I currently own a euro-reef skimmer, and no one could pay me enough money to take it off my tank. There just isn't sufficient cash in the world for me to even consider it. If you're doing a sump set up, a euro-reef is ideal, and comparable in price to the remora, and also just as easy to install and maintain. The only downside is that the pump is custom, and not as easy to replace as a maxijet...

I agree with many of the above when I say go with the Remora. I had a Remora Pro on my 75 for a few years and NEVER had a single problem with it nor a complaint.

I just got an AquaC Remora for my 20g and it works great. Very easy to install, maintain, and very easy to get the crud out of the cup and everything. :)
