overflow suggestions needed

Hey Folks!

I am reworking my tank to add a 10gal sump/ref. I have a 30gal AGA not drilled so I was wondering on options for overflow and pump selection.
I plan on keeping a small refugium in the center of the sump with plenty of space to catch any water in the system in case of a power outage.

But I am just not sure as to what overflow. Any suggestions?

Any of the hang on back overflows should work just fine. Browse different one on the MarineDepot website for some general info. If you still have questions let us know!

I have a CPR CS100 and have been very happy with it. I use the aqualifter to ensure that any air is removed to ensure that the siphon isn't broken. You need to clean it every couple of weeks, but other than that it is fairly reliable.

BTW. If you only have a 30gal why not put your money into a larger tank vice the overflow?

If you are going to stick with the 30gal for now.. I suggest you buy a larger overflow than needed so you can re-use it when you upgrade the display tank. A larger overflow won't hurt.

I have had a FO for 5 years in my 30. (Fresh before that for 10 years)

I want to start small on a full reef with my current equipment. I just completed my new stand and light hood (images on web site) so I am kind of stuck for a bit on the 30. I want the sump to add more water volume and to hone my skills for a larger tank down the road. I do plan on going larger on the overflow most likely with a Mag return.

Sounds familiar.. I just switched from Fresh to Salt and I am constantly finding ways to reuse my old equiment. I used my 20g as my sump and my old 20H as a refugium. I have a 30g that I wanted to use for a sump but it still has a freshwater cichlid that refuses to die even though she is well over 7 years old.

A 30gal will definitely "hone" your skills because when things go bad (and they will) you will notice FAST. As the old saying goes .. Dillution is the solution to polution.

Make sure you have a 35gal trash can with fresh RO water so you can do quick water changes if you see things going downhill. You probaly should keep some saltwater (~20 gal) already mixed to quarentine things if you get a major event.

And back to your question. If the sump is below your tank then I would suggest getting something like a Mag5 as a return pump. If it is too much power then add in a T in the sump w/ a ball valve.. or just use a spraybar in the display tank to distribute the flow. A Mag 5 w/ a CPR CS100 would work fine and you can alway re-use these when you upgrade to a larger tank.

I was thinking of he Mag5 so this is great advice about the spray bar and ball valve. I was wondering how I was going to reduce to flow.

My damsels and other inhabitants go back to the FS this weekend so I can start the rebuild!

I have a lifereef overflow. It has worked
flawlessly for the 9 months I have had it,
and always starts up after a power outage.
I have not cleaned it, and it does not
require any sort of bubble remover. You
can only buy it from Lifereef directly, and
sometimes you have to wait for it to be built.
