Mushroom Planting

OK, I bought a couple different mushroom singlets from my LFS which I guess moves my up a bit from FOWLR status (hurray!). One is stuck on a rock chip and the other to a snail shell. They seem to be doing pretty good and already open up if the lights are low (though the green striped one immediately spits out it's inards if I touch it). I'd kinda like them to stick to my main rock. Can I get them to transfer somehow? Or might that be too stressful? Or maybe leave them and their children will populate the rocks?

It generally better to leave them attached, especially if they are the only ones you have. You can place the little rock chip or shell on a bigger rock and/or even use reef-safe epoxy to place them exactly where you want. Don't be in a big hurry to try and frag or split them. Once they are established, you will surely get to see them to spread on their own.

If you put them on the rock (still attached to whatever little piece it's on), they'll naturally attach to the rock in less then a month. Be aware mushrooms spread like weeds and are hard to stop once they've taken over, so make sure you give them lots of room. I recommend you put them in a location where you can remove the entire rock just in case they grow out of control.

My experience is that they usually attaches in matter of days. Just make sure you don't move them around too much, and the water current allow them to remain in one place without constant rocking back and fore.

if the mushroom is attached to something that is too small to glue onto the big rock, you could place gravel or other large pieces of rock in a cup, place the mushroom along with the attached snail shell or whatever, let the mushroom attach to the small rocks and then glue the rock onto a larger rock.. the only benefit of this method is if the rock that the mushroom is attached to is too small, this allows you to work with a larger piece later on... and the cup helps keep the current from getting to strong around the mushroom while it's trying to attach

You can try to use hypodermic needle tips..pierce them through into the rock..they should be attached in about two weeks i saw this done in the Nano tank issue of Coral Magazine

I recommend glueing the little rock they are on to the big rock you want them to populate.

Get some superglue GEL, and put a dab on the rock they are on, then a little dab on the rock you are gluing them too (yes, right in the tank) and mush the two together and hold for 15 seconds or so, try not to have any squish out and get on your fingers when you put them together.

And don't try this with regular superglue, it's gotta be the gel, other wise you will just have a big mess, trust me :wink: .

I came home from work tonight to find that a hermit crab had taken the snail shell one of my mushrooms was stuck too. It was happily walking along dragging my mushroom's face through the sand. I had no idea how to get the crab out of there, so I did the probably-not-so-bright thing and carefully scraped the mushroom off the shell (it bled purple). Now, it's shriveled up just sitting in a small recess in the rocks where there's no real current to move it. Well, any chance of it surviving?

yes.. if there's no current.. it should attach itself to the rock work and grow.. if there was any remains on the snail shell, a new mushroom may grow there as well. hehe
