Halogen lighting

Probably a dumb question from a newbie but has anyone tried using Halogen lights for a reef tank ?

What are the drawbacks ?

The only advantage is the setup price, and cheap to replace the bulb.

The drawbacks are 1, wrong color, 2, low efficiency, 3, hot temperature, 4, short operating life, 5, bad ramification on the livestock.

In the relatively short period, all the economical advantage will disappear, and you will end up with a tank in bad shape due to a combination of overheating, low light level, high electricity bill, and dying corals/fishes.

You have to remember that corals need light in the 420-450 nm range.
Halogen would be OK in a FOWLER tank, but as tankgir1 said, "1, wrong color, 2, low efficiency, 3, hot temperature, 4, short operating life"

I have some halogen undercabinet lights in my tank but only to help buffer when the main lights go off an on, looks cool too.

I used halogens on all of my freshwater tanks, looks sooooo much better than the nasy flourescant (sp?) lighting.

Tang girl is absolutly right.I went through the halogen thing 6 months ago when I was experimenting with alternative lighting for a 2nd grow out system for frag's.I have been thinking about throwing the one I have on my tropical plant's I read it would do wonder's to plant's but not for a reef!!!
