Temperature and covered tankIt’s July in Washington DC and even my basement gets hot. The water temp in my tank has risen to as high as 82 in the evening !. It use to not go over 80 in the evening when I had a 2” by 24” opening, the other 14 inch taken up by the hang behind skimmer. I covered up that 2x24 because I added a firefish to the tank and was advised to do so because firefishes jump due to their skittish nature.

Am I over reacting by covering up that last uncovered 2x24” area ?

How high can I let the temp go before I am in trouble ? I have not had my temp go over 83 so far but the real hot Washington summer has yet to arrive.

Cover with mesh or egg crate, not with a solid thing. You'll make sure the firefish stays in while having cooling and gas exchange.

My tank has to be covered due to my Schauinslandi Sand Perch, which does like to leap about the tank.

Just get some egg crate from the lighting section of Lowes or HD, cut it too shape and place over your tank.

With a big fan i have on a shelf next to my tank i can drop the temp several degrees when it's on full speed, can be a bit noisy though, which i'm working on now
