I've recently built a setup in my garage which has RO water being fed into a food-safe container near the ceiling, and will have a food-safe salt-water container on the floor.

The idea was that I could build piping between the RO tank and the salt water tank, so that I can connect the two with piping and just turn a tap to fill the salt water tank with RO for making up.

But then I started thinking, if you go to the effort to get foodsafe containers for RO, is it moot if the piping between the two will leach chemicals into the water.

So... can you even get foodsafe piping, or will standard UPVC piping be ok, given that the contact time between the water and the plastic will be minimal as it goes from one container to another.

Does any of that make sense?? :P

Makes perfect sense and sounds like a great setup. PVC piping will be fine.

I like to give the glued joints time to dry (although you can really put water to them in a few minutes, I prefer to give them a day or two until the fumes are less noticeable). I also like to flush the whole thing with some clean water (tap is fine) because those pipes/fittings are generally a bit dirty from laying around in trucks, stores, etc.

HTH & good luck with your setup.

Ahh, so you glue pipes together?
I thought they all just slotted into each other.
THAT could have been an interesting error....

(will any kind of PVC glue be ok?)

being new to DIY and creating something which holds and transports gallons of water... let's just say I'll try and get a picture of me being swept out of my garage and down the street on a wave :P

Cheers Chris

PVC is available in "slip" and "threaded". The threaded fittings just screw together, and slip fittings are glued together with PVC glue. There are also cleaners and primers to be used before the glue goes on.

I generally just wipe the joints with a clean rag, prime them and then glue them. You push together (slight twist to make sure they seat fully) and hold for a few seconds. Pretty simple.

And yes, just the regular PVC glue and primer sitting on the shelf at Home Depot, or wherever, is fine to use.

IF you are going to use threaded fitting do not forget to put a couple of wraps of teflon tape.
