I am looking at buying an RODI filter. I will eventually have a 72g tank that I want to turn into reef. However at the moment all I have is a 20g. Does it matter what brand of RODI filter I buy? I'm currently looking at a 100 gpd RODI filter. Is this to small for a 72? I am sure it should be good for a 20g.

100 gpd is more than sufficinet for a 72 gal. Even a 25 gpd is good enough, IMO...

Brand does not matter. Get the best deal with post-purchase service that you can live with. I have good service experience with SpectraPure, FWIW.

I just bought mine off ebay. a dealer called filters direct has new ro/di systems for <$100. I got a 6 stage dual system with tank and drinking water for around $135 with shipping. just do a search on aquarium ro and should come up. I thought it was a good deal and works great!

i have a 100 gpd RO/DI for my 90g (+20g sump)... which is just about right.

depending on your pressure a 100gpd could be more like 40 -- mine does about 50gpd. that's in a 24 hour period, so it's not like turning on a hose. :) also keep in mind that you'll be running-off 3-4 times as much in waste water from the unit as you produce potable water. (so every 50 gallons of RO/DI uses about 150-200 gallons of tap).

i don't have mine installed under the sink because i fill-up a 40g rubbermaid once a month. between daily topoffs (1gpd fresh water) and 10%/week water changes (10g) a 40g container goes pretty quickly.

i also bought mine on ebay from a highly-rated dealer and have been very happy.

for a 72 i'd suggest sticking with the 100gpd... it's much less of a pain.
