Anyone any ideas why my yellow tang tends to lose its vivid colour occasionally throughout the day or evening? It goes much whiter/paler sometimes... Thanks

As far as an answer... at night, most fishes have more of a white/camoflouge coloration. It aids in survival where most nighttime critters hunt for them. Very common, and perfectly normal.
Yup! Both my yellow and nasso change colors. At night the naso's grey body turns almost black with white bloches, and the yellow turns almost albino white.
Oh, also wanted to add, that after I feed my tangs, they tend to get very skiddish (sp?), and will change colors too. It's weird, when they are hungery, they are brazen, but when their stomachs get filled, they become very nervous, and change color too.
My psych mandrin goby turns pale at night and I thought it was dead the first time I saw it. He blends in real well like that. It looks like a dead fish that's been soaking in water for days.
