I am new to the reef tank set up. I was wondering if there is an anenome that I can put in with my two percula clowns that doesn't need specialized lighting. All I have on my tank at this time is a regular day light singe bulb light strip. Is is a 55gallon with 25pounds of live rock and an in tank corner protien skimmer. Is there such an anenome?

Hi there

There really isn't a suitable host anemone that will thrive under that level of lighting. Percs naturally associate with Sebae, Carpet and Ritteri anemones and they are all anemones that do best under Halide lighing in a well established tank.

Your percs might take to a BTA or LTA (mine did) which require slightly less intense lighting, but you would still need to upgrade your setup to Power Compact lighting (something like 4x 55w over a 55g tank).

If you're in the market for a cheap lighting upgrade then I can recommend the Jebo 48" 220w power-compact fixture,, you can get it for about $80 on Ebay, including bulbs, and they work just fine,,, I have one on my 75g for actinics.

Good luck,, and welcome to RDO!

Hi and :welcome:

Unfortunately, there's really no such animal. Any of the hosting anemones are going to require strong lighting.

There are some corals that clowns will host in that are less demanding than the anemones, but generally they will also require more than the lighting you currently have.

I recommend picking up Joyce Wilkerson's book on clownfish (top book on this list):

http://www.reefs.org/library/reading/fish/fish.html

It's a great (and inexpensive) book and discusses the varies species of clownfish and their preferred hosting anemones, possible surrogate hosts, etc.
