Okay, I'm finishing setting up my tank and I'm having problems with micro-bubbles because I have too much water flow going through my sump. I wish I could upgrade the sump, but that's not an option at this point. So my question is whether or not it is okay to throttle back my pump. I'm pretty sure it is, I just want to double check to make myself feel better

The pump is a Sequence ReefFlo (which I am very pleased with). I only have a ball valve because it was originally there just to stop water flow during pump service (which it doesn't always do so well). My plan is to close the valve about 1/4 turn or so. I still get good flow this way, and have fewer problems. Basically I'm just looking for a supportive voice in this long project. :D Thanks for any help.

Not knowing the size of your tank, etc, you may want to baffle the sump to get rid of excess bubbles.

I have a 180 gallon tank, and the sump is a little over 20 gallons (I'll be adding a refugium once I get some more free time). I have baffles, but may be adding another set. The problem is that there is more flow going through it than I had planned for. I don't mind cutting back on the flow since it will reduce some overflow noise anyway. I have a pair of Tunze Streams for flow so that isn't a big problem. I'll still be flowing around 1000-1500gph through the sump. As always, thanks for your help.

...just a thought... can you get a large sump tank for this size tank to fit underneath, perhaps? That way you can fit everything in there too.. skimmer, heaters, etc.

Should be no problem as long as it is on the discharge side.

wings,
The sump I have down there is the largest I can fit under the stand. I built it myself to fit under there and it does have room for all of my equipment that needs to go in there. The reason it is smaller is so that I can have a larger refugium and room for my pumps and calcium reactor and what not.

Couple of thoughts.

1. If you're going to throttle the pump only do it on the outtake side, not on the intake side of the pump.

2. Micro bubbles are part of every new setup. I wouldn't do anything for a week or so. Same thing happened to me on my 125.
