I intend to set up a 10 gal QT. I've been reading posts here and this seems the way to go for me. I have a Whisper hang on filter that has a sponge as well as a compartment for carbon. How long should I put the sponge in the sump of my main tank before adding it to the QT? Also do you use carbon? If so when?

Hi Ray and :welcome:

The sponge should be pretty well populated with aerobic bacteria within a week or so. Some who use this technique leave one or more sponges in their sump continously so they are on-hand when they need the QT setup. Generally you'd discard the sponge after use in the QT - don't put it back in the main system (or at least disinfect with bleach or some similar method first).

As for carbon - you can use it continously in the QT tank unless you need to treat with medications. In that case, you should discontinue use of carbon as it removes most medications from the water.

Also, just keep in mind that you should never use the same buckets, tools, etc. for both your Q tank and your main system. You don't want anything cross-contaminating your display tank. Been there, done that, lost fish.
