algea blooms?

I have had my tank set up for almost 2 months. right now the only living things in it are 4 green chroms....a lawnmower blenny...and a sally lightfoot....and of course a few various snails....

I do have a future tank below the system for future plant life (my fuge)
All my water paramiters look good, the only one I have not tested that I could think of is phosphate that is effecting this little bit of algea bloom.

The odd thing is it is only in my overflow box and in my U pipe. it looks like a brown hair algea of some sort...I can grab a it with my fingers and pull blobs of it out...but the rest of the tank looks real good and clean.
Is this normale...if not why is only growing in my overflow boxes? and what are some options to help clear it?
If I were to buy a few plants for my fuge right now would it help with the algea any?

It might be growing due to lack of light(low light absorbing algae?) and lack of competition for nutrients..I think time will be a good cure..and check for phosphates, Im not sure if that would have an effect on your situation..

I've had the same stuff grow on the output flange of my HOT skimmer before. I know it isn't low light problems because this thing sits right under a MH Pendant. The good news is that I can normally pull it off, like you said... and it goes away for quite some time.

As for the fuge... yes it will help the blooms inside your tank. The sooner you can get your fuge up ... the better.. IMO.

Actually a fuge is my next big project.. I have to make a HOT fuge.. should be interesting!

It isn't unusual to have a variety of crud growing in the overflow, and could actually be beneficial. It is easy to remove from there for nutrient export, and will keep your nitrate down and hopefully help keep algae from getting a foothold in the display.

Your tank is fairly new, so algae blooms are normal. I would monitor your phosphate, since brown algae is a good indication of higher than normal levels.

BTW, try to refrain from using the reference 'plant life', as it may cause uncontrollable shudders with certain members. Just say macro or algae. :lol:
