No. Refractmeter is a optical device (unless you get one with fiber optic cable that cost a few grands), while a salinity monitor is a conductivity meter based on electronics.

Refractmeter is relatively cheap ($20-$50), and it easier to use.

I have the same unit ChrisP has and I've been very happy with it, what's nice is the fact it compensates for temperature.

I have both. While a monitor is great and a nice thing to have, you also need something to check it against.

After the monitor is calibrated, i'd take that over a refracto. Constant PH reading.

Refracto are 100x's better than any Hydrometer...

Yeah i read that again...i'm such a putz. I meant a constant salinity reading...

Hydrometers are pretty consistant, but not accurate. Once you "calibrate" the hydrometer it may not be bad for quick checks.
