I am relatively new to reefkeeping. I have had a 45 gallon reef tank up and running for about a year. Current fish are a Coral Beauty and two Ocellaris Clowns. I want to add one and perhaps two more fish but do not want to upset the harmony that currently exists in the tank.

My LFS suggested that a Neon Dottyback would be a good addition. However, I have read that they can be aggressive towards tank mates. Does anyone have any experience with this fish? Is my LFS just trying to sell me a fish? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for some other fish too, however, I prefer fish that can be tank raised or not threatened in anyway in the wild.

Thanks...

Neon dottybacks (even tank-raised ones) can be pretty fiesty. I seem to recall that tank-raised orchid dottys are among the more mellow dotties.

Have you considered a royal gramma? It's a popular fish, and a good reef inhabitant.

Yep, get a Orchid if you want something more peaceful (captive bred only). Make sure to get Pseudochromis fridmani (there are two others that aren't quite so nice). P.fridmani is often called the Red Sea Orchid Dottyback.

I have a P. fridmani and he is the most peaceful fish in my tank. He is also the only fish in my tank. I added it first which is normally a bad thing with dotties, but as Len and Chris said they are generally considered to be peaceful for the genus. I also think they happen to be a very nice looking fish.
