Protein Skimmer for my 29g tank

Hello all this is my 2nd post. I am looking to get a protein skimmer however I do not know what size or kind to get. I was looking at the Remora C but it appears to be too big for my 29g tank. Are there any suggestions of what kind to get for my 29g tank. I would like something that works well and is reasonably priced. Thank You

You could go with a bakpak or bakpak 2r. I think that if you look at the deminsions of a remora c, it will fit, unless you have alot of other stuff hanging on the back of your tank. In which case, the bakpak won't fit either.

I would suggest An AquaC Remora HOT. I have one on my 37G Reef and I LOVE it. I would also suggest going with the MaxiJet 1200 pump instead of the Rio too

I'm sure you wouldn't be dissapointed.

Although there ARE exceptions stay away from the Prisms and Seaclones ( the MAJORITY of ppl with them wish they had bought another type).

From what I hear the AquaC Remora or the bacpak would be the way to go for a tank of that size.

the remora hang on should fit just fine on a 29gal, its also easy to operate and not that noisy. I prefer the maxi jet 1200 pump to run it.

Thank you. I will be checking out to find a nice affordable price on one of them. I have a second question in regards to lighting. I recently purchased a JBJ light fixture for my tank that has the Actinic and the other light but I dont know how long I should run it or if there is a cycle that I should follow. I know that I have to get a timer so I dont have to do it manually but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Cab you give a few more specs on the light. Without knowing the specifics I would run the actinic 10-12 hours and the "white" light 8-10 hours.

Here are the specs on the light I have.

JBJ Aqualighting
*Coral Life 65 WATT 10,000k
*Blue Actinic 65 WATT

Here are the rest of the tank specs:

29 gal
30-35 lbs of LR
25 lbs of LS
2 powerheads: a 550 which does 145/gph and a 1140 which does 300/gph
Bio-Wheel Filter: which does 200/gph(I am looking into getting the Aqua C Remora protein skimmer)
The inhabitants are: Royal Gramma, Cinnamon Clown, & a Maroon Clown along with approx 10-15 blue legged crabs.

I would like to get corals and anemonies(sp) and get my tank to look like alot that I have seen on here but I do not know how to start. Should I buy them from my LFS or are they supposedly already in the LR in the tank? I was also told that I should get some more sand along with just a few more pounds of LR therefore I can get that "reef" look. Is this some advice that I should follow?

For your lighting schedule, it really depends on things like when your home in the evening. But as an example, actinic on at 9am and off at 9pm, 10K on at 11am and off at 7pm. That's dawn to dusk w/12 hr lighting schedule.

For my tastes, your fine on rock and sand. When you buy corals, they come attached to rock. So no need to buy more.

As for the corals you can have a beautiful tank with shrooms, rics, softies, zoas and the like. I don't feel that 130w is enough of anenomes, lps, clams or sps. I had the same type of lighting (130w pc's) on my old 29 and just would hate to tell you that you have enough light.

I would also remove one of the clown's and get a mate for the remaining one. They don't need an anenome, they will host in just about anything, once they decide that they want to.

I also had the same sort of bio whell filtration and it ended up being a pain. I removed the bio wheel and filter media and put some rock rubble in it's place.

I've never had a small tank, but Knowse gave some good advice and I agree on what she said. If you would like to get in to the more demanding corals I would sugges getting a 175watt metal haliade light. It is not a necessaty for the corals knowse listed and can be added at a later date.

back to the skimmer if I can....

If it is between the CPR and Remora I would definitly recommend the Remora. There isn't a danger of overflow, it is very good at what it does, and it is QUIET.

For lighting... I'm with the other guys.

When you're setting up a new tank make sure not to skimp on lighting and skimming.. those are your 2 major expenses, and your 2 major limiting factors.

I bought a CPR BakPak 2r+ and am thrilled with its performance. I have been gradually moving up the ladder. I have had the Seaclone and a Prizm and they suck compared to the Bak Pak.

I know you guys are all pro MH lights but I have to say I like my PC's. My MH has collected dust for almost 2 years now and I don't miss it.

It really depends on what you want to keep in your tank.

You can also consider Coralife's new Super Skimmers. From what I've read on here and other boards, they're comparable to Remora/Remora Pro - just way cheaper. There's pics of them in action on RC.

(Anyone have first hand experience with the Coralife SS? Can you post pics? I have to upgrade soon as well...)

i have a coralife super skimmer 65 on my 20L nano and like it. it doesnt have the quietest pump, but it skims like crazy. now that i have an auto-top-off system, i dont need to adjust it at all. i have to admit that i am not a huge fan of coralife products, but i really like this skimmer. it has "needle wheel" technology and it seems to work good. i have been using it for a couple months, so i dont have any long term eperience with it. what also sold me on it was the $100 price tag. i wanted to go with a remora, but didnt want to cough up that much money. i dont have any pictures of it, but if you go to the coralife website, it has plenty.
